Dr. Madeleine van Schalkwyk finished medical school in 1997 at the University of Stellenbosch. Her love for adventure took over and she works as a general practitioner in South Africa, England, Canada and as a ship’s doctor in the Caribbean Islands before returning in 2005 to further her studies in her first love, paediatrics.
She finished paediatrics in 2008 at the University of Stellenbosch. For the next 7 years she worked in paediatric private practice in Cape Town and in Canada as a paediatrician. After gaining valuable experience and lovely snow filled Christmases, she realised that home is where the heart is and came back to South Africa.
In March 2016 Dr. Madeleine van Schalkwyk opened her doors for the children in Hermanus and surrounding areas. Dr Madeleine has a special interest in Neonatology. She consult on all aspects of general paediatrics and neonatology, including asthma, allergy, ADHD, developmental evaluations, childhood illness and much more.
When she is not at work you will often find her hiking, reading or taking photos of nature. There might also be a dog or two tagging along.
Elna is the voice on the phone and the smile behind the reception desk. She used the be a teacher, then tried her hand at church office administration. Not yet ready for retirement, she promptly backed her bags and moved with Dr Madeleine to Hermanus. ( Dr. Madeleine is her daughter after all) She tends to fall in love with every baby visiting the office.
